Owning a property in Spain is about more than just sun, tapas, and vacation life. It also opens doors to financial opportunities you may not have known existed — straight from Sweden. Did you know that as a Swedish property owner in Spain, you may be eligible for Swedish ROT and RUT tax deductions, and even support for installing solar panels and energy storage systems? This isn’t just smart economics — it’s a way to make your investment more sustainable and more profitable.
ROT and RUT tax deductions are not limited to homes located in Sweden. If you are registered and fully tax liable in Sweden, you may, under certain conditions, receive tax reductions for work carried out on your property in Spain.
Here’s how it works:
ROT: covers renovations, repairs, and construction work
RUT: includes cleaning, gardening, pool maintenance, snow removal, etc.
Update for 2025! From May 31 to December 31, 2025, the ROT deduction will be temporarily increased from 30% to 50% of the labor cost. This means you can reclaim half of the labor cost, up to SEK 75,000 per person.
Annual limits for 2025:
ROT: max SEK 50,000/person
RUT: max SEK 75,000/person
Total cap: Combined ROT and RUT may not exceed SEK 75,000/person/year
Through the Swedish Tax Agency's green technology tax reduction, you may receive support for:
Solar panel installation – 20% of labor and material cost
Battery storage systems – 50%
Electric vehicle charging stations – 50%
Does it apply outside Sweden? Yes – as long as you are fully tax liable in Sweden, provide full documentation according to Swedish requirements, and the installation meets local Spanish regulations.
Maximum grant:
Up to SEK 50,000 per person per year for green technology.
Worth knowing: Due to stronger sun exposure, lower installation costs, and cheaper grid fees in Spain, the payback time for solar energy systems is often much shorter than in Sweden — as little as 4–6 years, compared to 10–15 years in Northern Europe. Combined with Swedish grants and Spanish electricity savings, the economics are very favorable.
How to Proceed – Step by Step
1. Choose an installer in Spain familiar with Swedish clients.
2. Request a quote/invoice that includes:
3. Itemized labor and material costs
4. Name of the paying customer
5. Tax ID or company registration number
6. Pay from your own account — cash is not accepted.
7. Ask for the invoice to comply with Swedish Tax Agency standards.
Apply for deduction:
ROT/RUT in your Swedish income tax return
Green technology either directly on the invoice or via your tax declaration
Don’t Forget Local Regulations
The installation must comply with Spanish laws regarding electrical safety, CE markings, and any necessary building permits (licencia de obra). Always check with your local ayuntamiento (municipality).
